Richard Henrich (pictured left) of Salem served his country for thirteen months as an Army combat medic during the Korean War.

He has lived in New Hampshire for 25 years. Now, at the age of 77, Richard was receiving disability care at a nursing home. He was ready to leave, but his landlord did not want him back.

For nearly 40 years, New Hampshire’s legal aid programs have helped tens of thousands of our state’s poor and elderly in need of legal help.  Here are some of the ways the New Hampshire Pro Bono Referral Program (Pro Bono), Legal Advice and Referral Center (LARC) and New Hampshire Legal Assistance (NHLA) make a difference. 

2009 accomplishments include:

Pro Bono:

  • Linked volunteer attorneys to people with urgent issues related to custody, divorce, bankruptcy, debt collection, landlord-tenant and other legal matters, benefiting over 5,000 people.

  • Provided over $2 million in free legal services.

  • Maintained a panel of over 1,000 volunteer attorneys.

LARC:  

  • Provided telephone advice and referrals for people with urgent legal issues related to housing, family law and tax issues, benefiting over 9,000 people.

  • Helped over 1,000 low-income people with housing issues.

  • Provided assistance to more than 1,000 families in the areas of divorce, child support and parenting plans.

  • Provided low-income tax credit education to over 2,000 people.

NHLA:

  • Provided legal advice, brief services and full representation to people with urgent legal issues related to housing, health care, public benefits, domestic violence and other legal matters, benefiting over 10,000 people.

  • From July 2007 - June 2009, obtained over $6,695,288 worth of Social Security/SSI benefits, Medicare and child support for clients.
